condorUnfortunately, a too common problem in many areas of the County, including Rosemont, is people scavenging recyclables from our cans we leave street-side to be picked up weekly by the County. While it may seem harmless and a way for people (often homeless) to earn a bit of money, it is a potential problem in some ways. It may be that a scavenger may find some personal information about you that could compromise your identity and security. It could be that they can get an idea from what you discard what you have in your house and return later for a “visit” or tip off someone else. It may provide cover for someone with stolen goods to claim that they only scavenged it. Or it may simply be a way for someone to earn money to feed a drug or alcohol habit that will only get worse. Whatever their motivation, it is quite possible that by not reporting the scavenging you are not helping them in the long run.

Because the County recognizes this problem, there is a law by which you can take action to stop it. Although this is not a high priority crime, the County is prepared to act. All you need do to report scavenging is to call 916-875-5656 (or TDD 916-975-7105). For more information, go to http://www.wmr.saccounty.net/Pages/Curbside-Mixed-Recycling.aspx
