Occasionally in social media posts we see comments that reflect negatively on our community, and therefore on ourselves. While we may feel worried or scared, when we disparage ourselves in questioning or complaining, we do no one any favors. Comments like “ghetto bird” referring to the Sheriff’s helicopter (we don’t call patrol cars “ghetto cruisers,” rather we’re glad they are here), or “low lifes” or “scum” in referring to questionable individuals seen in the area, are as much a reflection on us as on those we criticize. We do need to be vigilant and act to keep Rosemont safe and appealing, reporting concerns promptly where appropriate, but we don’t need to use words that serve to disparage us. That does us no good.
