The World Health Organization has declared the Coronavirus a global pandemic today as the number of people exposed to COVID-19 is expected to increase in the coming weeks. In addition to this, we are still in the midst of flu and allergy season and public health officials are asking anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms to stay home. Below are some recommended guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control that could help you minimize your risk for possible exposure:

  1. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  4. If you are sick, stay home unless when seeking medical care.
  5. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have time to grab a tissue, sneeze into your elbow. Make sure to throw any used tissues into the trash and immediately wash your hands with soap and water.
  6. Wear a facemask if you are sick when you are around other people.
  7. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. This includes tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks.
